Border Conflict. Uncle Tom was stationed in Germany as part of the "Occupying Force" after the Allied victorious defeat of the Nazi Regime. But the main 4 Victorious Allies (The USA, Great Britain, France, and Russia) divided up Germany into 4 Occupation Zones. There was great tension that the Russians would continue the war now on the other 3 Nations to gain full control of Germany. Uncle Tom was on the front lines of that. Think about this guy right there, knowing there could be a major attack at any moment and he's first in the line of fire!
Later he got assigned to the War in Korea and fought bravely on the front lines, being a Browning M2HB .50 caliber tripod-mounted heavy Machine Gun operator at one point under waves of enemy attack.
In returning to civilian life, Tom served in the civil service, here with a "heavy sorting machine" in a long career in the Syracuse Post Office where he was greatly loved and respected. Tim writes: "The father of one of my friends, a guy we'd hang-out with listening to his tremendous Jazz collection, worked at the P.O. alongside Uncle Tom and spoke very highly of him and how he was so regarded at work."
